Corden Cup & EDCS 4

As skippers arrived at the Harwich & Dovercourt lake, the morning started with light rainDSC01612 and a northerly wind across the pond. Proceedings were delayed for a time as three people who had pre-entered failed to turn up, which required the two seeding races to be reviewed. Even without the three missing skippers the turn out of 17 was very pleasing, requiring two fleets because of the nature of the water.

As the seeding races progressed, the rain stopped and the wind swung to more or less down the pond. As racing continued so the wind swung from one side to the other.

It soon became obvious that Colin Goodman was going to be the skipper to beat, but after three races, Peter Stollery got his act together and started to challenge Colin creating a great battle at the front. This left Vernon Appleton, Graham Bartholomew and David hope to fight over third place, with the rest of the fleet battling for the lower places. Unfortunately David seemed to fade in the later races leaving Vernon and Graham to battle for third place, whilst Colin and Peter continued to challenge each other at the front.

DSC01617At the end of the day, Colin managed to maintain the advantage he had gained in the first few races and take the win with 10 points followed by Peter on 14 points. This left Vernon and Graham on equal 29 points, with Vernon taking the third place based on count back.

There was some very good close racing with places changing on all legs of the course.  Dovercourt & Harwich is a great place to sail with free car parking and close to the pond edge and when the sun shines and added bonus. Our thanks to Harwich & Dovercourt for hosting the event and to all the skippers who were well behaved.

Apples Trophy & PRACC 5

On Sunday 12th June Coalhouse Fort MBC hosted the Apples Trophy and Round 5 of the PRACC series for ‘A’ Class Boats. There was a disappointing turn out of only seven boats for the event, but nevertheless there was some good racing throughout the day.2016-06-12 17.38.45

On arriving at the lake, it was overcast but dry with a strong breeze primarily from the south, which allowed Race Officer, Geoff Appleton, to set a large triangle and sausage course covering almost 3/4 of the length of the lake. This enabled skippers who had made a poor start to make up ground.

Very soon after the first race, it started to rain, which continued off and on throughout the 2016-06-12 17.40.51morning, although this did not appear to dampen the spirits of the skippers. It soon became very apparent that Vernon Appleton was going to make use of his local knowledge and dominate the event. In one race he even started last across the line but by the first mark was leading, such was his ability to read the wind and use the course to his advantage. Bob Connor and Phil Holliday did their best to keep up with Vernon, but ultimately he was able to counter their moves, apart from race 12, when Bob managed to take a win, with Richard Aucott second and Roger Dunklin, who had struggled earlier on taking third.

2016-06-12 17.39.362016-06-12 17.41.14

After taking a lunch break, the wind seemed to drop away, such that the Race Officers considered a change of course, but it quickly built up again and so the course remained the same throughout the day. After lunch it brightened up and the sun begin to shine, with Bob and Phil continuing to battle for second and third places, with Richard and Roger making occasional forays.

With very few incidents, all the skippers behaved impeccably and did their turns when protested and so our thanks to all of them for making it a great day. Also, thanks to the race team consisting of Geoff Appleton, Malcolm Schaffer and John Newton, the event ran smoothly without any issues.

Vernon Appleton was the clear winner on 12 points, followed by Bob Connor on 30 points and Phil Holliday third on 34 points.

Eastern District IOM Championship Series – Round 3

Putting the results into the EDCS table following the Lifeboat Pennant and  Round 3 hosted by Lee Valley, shows no change to the order among those who have competed in all three events so far.

With all three counting those with only 2 events have dropped behind somewhat though some now have a second event to count and have moved up the table.

Table has been updated.

Lifeboat Pennant & EDCS 3

Twelve skippers from 5 clubs and their boats of 8 different designs arrived at Lee Valley’s Clayton Hill lake for the Lifeboat Pennant event. As usual no entry fee was charged but skippers were invited to make a donation to the RNLI to which they responded with a total of £90.42.

This year we seem to have had awkward wind directions on the lake and today was no exception so we had challenging or frustrating conditions depending on your point of view. We set a port rounding triangular course with the start line angled across the lake and the first mark more or less up wind of that. Two laps of that took a reasonable time and kept the boats apart. For many starts a starboard tack was possible but not always and it would have been pointless to change the course as by the time that was accomplished the wind would have changed back to where it was. However the many shifts, swirls and gusts made sure that almost every leg needed a tack or two to complete. Fortunately the skippers realised the difficulty and just got on with the racing with good humour.

Colin Goodman soon made it clear that he was going to be the one to beat by winning four of the first five races races.  At this point where there was one discard, others with reasonable scores were Mark Dennis, who took the other win, with11, Vernon Appleton with 13 and Graham Bartholomew with 15 points.

Colin continued by winning 3 of the next 4 races by which time there were 2 discards, for a total of 7 points while Vernon was now in second place with 17 points, Graham in third place with 23, and Mark in fourth place with 25 points. And so it continued with Colin winning most races to win the event, though Mark won a few more to finish second, and Vernon was not far away in third place. Graham had dropped down somewhat to finish fourth and late run of better results moved John Richmond up the order to fifth.

Once again an anonymous donor kindly provided some bottles of wine for the first 4 places.

DF 65 Charity Event – Coalhouse Fort MBC

What perfect weather for the Coalhouse Fort MBC Dragon Force 65 IMG_0884Charity Event in aid of the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Fund on Sunday 8th May 2016. Apart from the wind coming initially from the ENE and then veering more to the east, the conditions were great for this Charity Event.

Skippers from Coalhouse Fort MBC and Southend MBC were joined by David Brown from Eastbourne and in a relaxed fun atmosphere, completed some 16 races to determine the overall winner. After the 16 races the fleet was split into two, an A & B Heat with the top three in each heat receiving prizes donated by Coalhouse Fort MBC and Sochs Sails. In addition to the winning prizes, there was a raffle with prizes being donated by RC Yachts, CAT sails, Sochs Sails and Howard Dalton, and our thanks to all for their donations. There was no entry fee, with all proceeds going to the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Fund.

IMG_0885With the wind initially coming from the ESE, John Newton the Race Officer, assisted by Malcolm Schaffer, set a windward/leeward course with a spreader mark at the windward end and a gate at the leeward end. Since most of the competitors had never experienced a ‘gate’ course before it was interesting to see how they coped. For the first three races, IMG_0883Howard Dalton led almost from start to finish with everybody following him round the port mark at the leeward end, with John Wren and David Brown keeping in touch. However, Glenn Meekcoms suddenly appeared to recognise that rounding the starboard mark at the gate provided some advantage and consequently took the next three races from Angela Mears, who had been leading until Glenn took a different course. As more people recognised the advantage to be gained of rounding the starboard mark at the gate, David Brown started to make his impression. By lunch time, David Brown was leading, with Howard Dalton second, Glenn Meekcoms third and Angela Mears fourth.

After lunch the wind had veered more easterly and the Race Officer initially changed the IMG_0886start line and the first mark, but then went on to change the course two roundings of triangle all on port, thereby doing away with the gate. This seemed to cause some skippers more problems whilst others such as Angela Mears started to come into their own once they got used to the change. However, through the whole day David Brown was consistent which eventually led to him winning the overall event on 28 points, followed by Angela Mears on 33 points and Glenn Meekcoms third on 37 points. Unfortunately Howard Dalton who had been in the running had a rudder issue which meant he missed out on one race and suffered in at least two others because he had not centred the new servo properly.

Following the main event, to ensure the less experienced skippers shared the spoils, the Race Officer split the fleet into two heats, the bottom half in terms of scores going into the ‘B’ Heat, and the top half going into the ‘A’ Heat and the top three from each heat winning a prize.

The results of this was as follows:

‘B’ Heat

1st Bryan Spencer; 2nd Steve Bines; 3rd Jamie Stevens

‘A’ Heat

1st Angela Mears; 2nd Glenn Meekcoms; 3rd Lesley Parks

The event raised £234.52 in total for the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Fund, and our thanks to all those who contributed and especially to those who provided the prizes.

It was a great day, with all the competitors behaving by doing turns when asked and at the end of the day indicating they had a good time.

We hope to do it all again next year and hopefully a few more skippers will take part.

‘B’ Heat

1st Bryan Spence; 2nd Steve Bines; 3rd Jamie Stevens
